This is the one that goes in the reading copy slot and the long box — the standard newsstand cover for the biggest Marvel event of the summer.

Dike Ruan's main cover is a proper event-launch image: Red Hulk looming at the top in silhouette against a wall of green lightning, and the response assembling below him. Spider-Man crouched mid-leap, Iron Man, Invisible Woman, Captain Marvel, Wolverine claws-out in the foreground, Sam Wilson's Captain America shield-first at the center, Vision streaking in from the right. Everybody's pointed the same direction and none of them look confident about it.

Chip Zdarsky's story opens with Red Hulk — Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross — tearing across the globe, forcing the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Wolverine and more into a single desperate gathering. Marvel positioned the five-issue series as the biggest structural change to Earth's Mightiest Heroes since Avengers: Disassembled in 2004, and framed it as a hard dividing line — a pre-Armageddon Marvel Universe and a post-Armageddon one. The setup runs out of Zdarsky's Captain America run, One World Under Doom, and Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, but the issue is built to work cold.

Worth noting for buyers who don't chase variants: the main cover is the printing that actually matters for a first appearance, and this issue is the launch point for a new Avengers era. If the roster change out of this event sticks, the base cover of #1 is the book people go looking for later.
